Why should they be able to sell every other item in their house or business that they no longer need but not their software licenses? And why should I not benefit from that much lower price if I do as much due diligence as I possibly can, including - painfully (because its very hard to get to talk to someone who knows anything) - running the key past Microsoft themselves.

I'm pretty satisfied that there are some people on eBay selling licenses they no longer need to get a few quid. And in any case a deactivated Windows 10 functions perfectly well - though I'll certainly admit it isn't good for business! The question is a moral one. Even if it "deactivates" down the line, its very easy to find another key that activates - ad infinitum. Honestly the question for me is not whether it works. Interestingly UsedSoft failed to meet those conditions in their landmark case vs Oracle: They might be very dutiful and give you a new key if the first one doesn't work but that doesn't mean its a genuine legal key.ĮU doesn't allow gray market keys, it allows the selling of used keys with very strict conditions. "reputable or at least recognized" re seller - that's very hard to judge. I think if Amazon are selling direct from Microsoft its ok. In an ideal world it would be everything shiny and new for everyone but some folks do not appear to have that luxury for whatever reason. the trick with these INHO is to find a "reputable or at least recognized" re seller and look at their reputation for when issues occur. One will often find a volume licence key being used. This however doe snot guarantee authenticity or accuracy. I would not ever assume anything I bought from Amazon was ever genuineĪs far as other keys as indicated above it is covered by local legislation EU allows Gray market keys. Where is the line drawnĪmazon, Curry's, eBuyer, Scan, dabs, misco, insight, Box, CCL, any legitimate computer reseller - eBay may also have genuine sellers, but it's a risk to know for sure I don't have a clue though - hopefully someone can comment.Īnd what is an genuine reseller in any case. Opens a new window (I know this one is sold from Israel - and I think you're only meant to use a copy of Windows for your own region - but it says "INTL USB" which I take to mean "international". that is presumably absolutely legitimate and a product you can have total confidence in. I'd like to say if the key activates then that proves they have done due diligence, but I'm sure that's not the case!īut with new (shrink wrapped copies) which pass the Microsoft tests above. With used copies, I guess there is a level of trust that the seller has uninstalled the product and not taken a note of the key for future use/resale. Its presumably absolutely OK to resell retail licenses. If one can verify the authenticity of the product here:
